Halloween is the night for Dementors to be walking about. These frightening, flying, fiends are so scary they only have to be seen in the distance to cause chill bumps to run up your spine. They never speak, they just fly around scaring people with their presence until they decide to eat, which is when you need to turn on the lights! Like most dark creatures from Harry Potter, they represent the dark side of magic and human nature. They feed off people both Muggle and Wizard, and cause them to be sad and unhappy. While witches and wizards and can see them, Muggles and Squibs cannot, they just get sad for no reason. Squibs could learn to recognize the signs of a Dementor being close by, but never have they been strong enough magically to see them. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger have all seen them up close, for Harry they were too close on several occasions. It is very frightening to see a dementor looming over you, ready to suck away all your happiness!
